Rednecks on the blue water

The freaks who massacred a bunch of seals on Wilsons Promontory back in August have been sentenced.

To a frigging slap on the wrist!

These guys had been drinking, they had high powered rifles, and were laughing and cheering as they used them to illegally shoot 40 Australian fur seals. There were uni students camping on the island while conducting research on the seals; they reported the incident to police.

[One of the culprits' lawyers] said Goodwin was extremely remorseful for his actions and horrified to discover there were people on the island and that he had impacted on their research project.

Yeah. Horrified to know that he'd been caught, the bastard. I'm sure if the uni students hadn't been there to dob him in he'd have been so filled with remorse and sorrow at his actions that he would have dobbed himself in. Yeah fucking right.

What's with the 'six-month intensive correction order' that makes up part of the sentence? How about banning the arsehole from owning a gun or operating a boat for his entire life? It's not like he didn't know what he was doing was against the law, he just thought he'd get away with it.

And he pretty much has. The fine should at least have been big enough to force him to sell his boat.

shoot them all in the leg and throw them in the water off the island. crack open some beers and bet on which, if any will make it to land.

Not to worry, the ALP is on the case! Why, just a few weeks ago, they introduced their brilliant animal cruelty policy. It involves just two things - giving the RSPCA 3x more money, and doubling fines.

There's a few things that need to happen in incidents like this:

1. The mental health department, ASIO and the AFP take an immediate interest, and open files on them - these guys obviously require monitoring.

2. They need to be studied - what brought them to do this? Why is it fun? Do they understand empathy, or are they complete psychopaths? What is the likelyhood of themselves, or their offspring, to harm animal or man? Should they be chemically castrated without anesthesia? Can they be cured? If not, should they be allowed to roam in public, or should they remain isolated? Is it a result of upbringing or a genetic defect? We NEED to know this information.

THEY ENDANGERED THE LIVES OF HUMANS.
THEY KILLED 40 PROTECTED SEALS
THIS GUY FACED 9 CHARGES.
$5k and a bit of therapy? Fuck that.

They're not spiders being washed down the sink, they're not rabbits being culled, these are fucking big animals.

The magistrate is not to blame, he works with the laws he's given. The laws are bullshit. If they killed 40 hardly-endangered family-companion dog/cats what would they get? These animals are not of less value.

Some good ideas in there, particularly the monitoring. Studies have demonstrated that people who harm animals for fun (for want of a better word) are more likely to commit acts of violence against people. They are a danger to the community, and yet the sentences for such crimes are consistently inadequate.
