'Liar' is too mild a term to describe Newt Gingrich... a quick perusal of his Wiki should suffice for an explanation.
This morning I heard American politician and all-around scumbag Gingrich on ABC Newsradio lying about how 'gun crime has gone up in Australia' since John Howard initiated the Federal government buyback of guns after the Port Arthur Massacre 11 years ago.
It's not true. It's never been true. John Howard's stance on guns is probably the only issue I back him on. The buyback was effective, and every society, including ours, is better off without guns.
Using deaths data since 1915, the authors estimated gun control had led to about 35 fewer murders and 247 fewer suicides annually since 1997. They calculate slightly smaller numbers when their statistical model is restricted to data after 1969.
Their report found no evidence that gun control may have simply caused a substitution from shooting to other killing methods.

The authors slam an earlier report in the British Journal of Criminology that claimed the firearms agreement had no effect on death rates.
That study, by Jeanine Baker from the Sporting Shooters' Association of Australia and Samara McPhedran from the Coalition for Women in Shooting and Hunting, exploited less than a third of the available annual data and used "very dubious" statistical methodology, they say.

The most recent reliable figures, for 2002-03, show there were 0.27 firearm-related homicides per 100,000 Australians - about one-fifteenth of the US rate.
"The risk of dying by gunshot halved over the past 10 years," said Philip Alpers, adjunct associate professor at the University of Sydney's School of Public Health.
We have it good here. If someone breaks into your home in Australia, chances are they won't have a gun. If someone holds up a service station, chances are they won't have a gun. If gunshots are fired in public here, let alone someone getting hit, it makes the national news. Heck, if someone gets shot with a BB pellet here it makes the national news.
America has got it wrong, and because they can't admit it to themselves, they just lie about how much worse it is for everyone who hasn't made the same mistake.

Amen. Newt of course is standing for the Republican nom for president. So to say anything anti gun is to kiss his chances good bye. I wish he wouldn't lie through his arse about it.
My favourite piece of Newt in operation was how he went after Clinton for Clinton being engaged in sexual relations outside of marriage ... just like Newt was at that exact same time.
Moby posted about Newt recently, predicting his career was about to come to a "grinding halt".

Well, it's 2009 and I see the comments are all old before the real facts came out about the Australian gun control laws. I've goggled Australian gun crimes and the list of sites, one right after another, reading them says that in fact the gun control laws made the situation worse especially in armed robberies. Stick that in your gun control pipe and smoke it.
