Standing up to moronic gunlosers after Port Arthur. I have no idea about his motivation but he did the right thing in the teeth of fearsome opposition from his own allies. Even now stupid halfwits peddle conspiracy theories about how it was all a secret Howard plot to disarm all Australians so he could control us all. For taking deadly weapons away from idiots he deserves some respect and it should be acknowledged here. It showed that he wasn't incapable of doing the right thing, just that most of the time, he wasn't willing to.

I'd never heard of such a conspiracy theory, but my head is spinning at the thought of something so illogical. The only thing responsible for Port Arthur is that thing who doesn't even deserve a name. In my opinion, Howard made the right call in the face of great opposition. A tough intro to the leadership, and I pray to Buddha that Mr. Rudd never has to deal with a similar situation.

I like the depth of the Port Arthur conspiracy, it's elaborate and unlikely.
Whenever I've tried to say something positive about John Howard, I get to the gun laws, then get a bit stuck.
But, a lot of people got an extra sick day, and... um.. his speech was still better than Rudd's. Oh, and he helped expose the Liberal parties M.O. (and let's face it, the general public had no freakin' idea.)

And yeah, the gun thing is about the only positive thing I've ever had to say about Howard too. Pru Goward was on the 7.30 report last night saying that one of the great things about Howard was that he made it ok to say things that previously would have been considered racist or bigoted, rather than people having to be 'politically correct'. Well. I don't think I need to spell out what I think of that, or of Pru Goward for saying it.
i don't understand why perfectly sensible people who presumably haven't been hit in the head with a blunt object, like cam, can support a man who made it ok to publish, broadcast and say the worst racist filth. a man who only ever divided the country and perverted the very soul of his party. economic management? bullshit. anyone with half a brain knows the truth about the economic reforms that got us here. history will not be kind to him, especially because we're going to find out the truth about a lot of things.
The truth will out Gam. It always does.
