Speaking of wankery, how's this for a blatant display of Australia's patented brand of racism?
More than 2000 people have protested the building of a private Islamic school in Sydney's south-west as the backlash against the project - including a text message campaign - builds.
The proposed Islamic school for Camden has outraged thousands of residents, some of whom say it would bring violence to the suburb and turn it into a "dirty looking town like Lakemba".
Camden Mayor Chris Patterson said most of the 270 responses received so far opposed the plan on "perceived problems with traffic, rural lifestyle and amenities" but concerns aired in posts on the local newspaper's website were more blunt.
A Camden Advertiser reader who identified only as Hayley said she felt sick. "The thought of our beautiful Camden accommodating to this religion is a disgrace ... This Islamic school will change the town forever," she said.
A resident of 14 years, Gary Wright, said if Camden Council wished to bring crime and corruption to Camden and make it a "dirty looking town like Lakemba I supose (sic) they will go ahead anyhow".
In the 2006 Census, the suburb of Camden had 3,166 residents of which 69 per cent identified as Christian and another 13 per cent, of no religion.
The spokesman for the Quranic Society, Jeremy Bingham, said he had anticipated the religious backlash.
"People fear what they don't yet understand," he said. "There's nothing at all for people to be afraid of any more than they need to be afraid of Catholics or Jews or Protestants."
Kindergarten to year three pupils would be enrolled first to the school, which could open for the 2009 school year. New grades would be added each year and children would not have to be Muslim to enrol, Mr Bingham said.
Students would be taught subjects in line with the government syllabus in a structure that allows for prayer and time dedicated to religious instruction - just like in other church schools, he said.
"It's just a school for little kiddies who want to learn to be good Australians and they will be taught to be good Australians. Their religious faith happens to be the Muslim faith, that's all," Mr Bingham said.
Yep, just like other church schools. Except the fuckwits protesting this school wouldn't blink an eyelid at the prospect of a catholic or anglican-run school starting up. In fact, they'd probably be keen to enrol their kids there. Racists.
And here's another great example of how "we're not racist, we just hate people who aren't exactly like us" Australia is portrayed overseas (and deservedly so) from the weddings section of the New York Times:
Part of her problem was that she did not completely fit in anywhere: In New York, she was an Australian immigrant. In Australia, she was an ethnic Chinese refugee from Malaysia. “I never really felt accepted,” she said, referring to growing up near Sydney, where strangers told her to “go back where you came from.”
Yeah... we don't have a problem with racism...

It always amazes me when I comment that Australia is a racist country and people shout me down, saying that we're not.
We bloody well are! And this is a perfect example of it. It's the whole, "I'm not racist, but..." thing. Pisses me off every time.
Hilarious. I wonder if the same level of protest would have occurred had it been an Exclusive Brethren school?
Islam is not a race. It is not racist to protest the building of a religious school.
You're right about islam not being a race. But you're wrong in that the fuckwits protesting the building of that school are doing so for racist reasons and nothing else. If there was a problem with real religious hatred in Australia we'd have people protesting at exclusive brethren and other cult-run schools, or anglicans protesting about the building of catholic schools.
I also find it interesting, Darrin, that you're part of the 'anglo-australian national community council', which sounds like a racist group if I ever heard of one.
Why is it "racist" for anglo-celtic australians to have an organisation to represent them?
Every other ethnic, cultural and religious group in australia has councils and associations to protect their individual interests.
So how is it only racist when anglos do it?
Little bit of racism yourself there sarah.
Might wanna look at that.
wow, we've never had an organised racist here before. the 'group' he fronts is a racist group which, as far as i can tell, consists of himself raving like a real life cartman about 'dealing with' der juden, er muslamischen.
darrin hodges. racist.

Hi dead racist. First of all, your organisation in no way represents 'anglo-celtic' Australians in general, *thank god*.
I would ask what interests and rights you believe white Australians have that need 'protecting' that aren't already taken care of by our white, overwhelmingly male-dominated local, state and federal governments. The reason that other ethnic, cultural and religious groups have organisations to represent them is usually a) in the sense of a community, just like belonging to a church provides, not just for advocacy and b) because they are minorities in this country and need protecting from bigotry and discrimination at the hands of people like you (and also people like those in our federal government who aren't so overt in their racist views).
You know what? I'm not 'white' first and foremost- I'm human and I'm Australian. Not only that, I don't see how my interests don't coincide with that of any other Australian, whether their background be greek, polish, chinese, afghani, iraqi or ghanaian.
Lastly, I'm not even sure why I'm bothering to respond to your questions. I've never encountered a racist who is a rational human being and able to argue any rational basis for their bigoted views. I have no doubt that this is a fruitless exercise, but I do hope that you are given cause to wake up to yourself and realise how damaging your views can be to other people. Racism and bigotry can never be justified.

Nice contradiction. So how can protesting against a religious school be racist, given Islam is not a race?

Then on your logic Sarah, the Lebanese Muslim Assocation of Lakemba is a racist organisation. Also under that same umbrella would be the Sudanese Ethnic Group of Punchbowl. Damn, racists just get everywhere don't they?
So how can protesting against a religious school be racist, given Islam is not a race?
Because the people doing it are doing so not because they have a problem with the religion per se but because they associate islam with middle easterners.
Then on your logic Sarah, the Lebanese Muslim Assocation of Lakemba is a racist organisation
If the Lebanese Muslim Association had ideals that involved deporting everyone but lebanese muslims from the country, or forcing everyone to become just like lebanese muslims then yes, they would be a racist organisation. As far as I'm aware, however, they're not.
Your group, however, as well as a number of others that you've been a part of, are dyed-in-the-wool racist groups with racist ideals and racist aims. I'm not sure you are in any position to be talking about logic given your arguments are totally devoid of them.
I'm not going to engage you any further, as I don't like to give you any encouragement nor give any impression that your views are ones that are worthy of debate or even notice.
darrin hodges is a former member of the racist australia first party. one of jim saleam's butt-buddies till he realised he could just cross out 'jew' and put in 'muslim' on party literature.
he is officially declared persona non grata, as are his associates. their posts will be deleted from here on. i suppose i'll have to go and get yet another haloscan account.
