We had a rather more exciting finish to our weekend than we had planned when on Sunday, arriving home to a frantically-ringing landline after leaving our mobiles at home, we were informed by my Mum that Gam's mother had been trying to ring us. Gam's brother Semefa was in hospital. Gam phoned Semefa, who was sitting in Emergency at the Princess Alexandra, and found out he'd been stabbed, or rather suffered a cut to the hand after some psycho attacked him with a knife. He was awaiting surgery because doctors wanted to try and repair some nerve damage to a finger. I phoned Mummy to reassure her that we would go and see Semefa and that it seemed that his injury wasn't too serious.
Thank god it happened the weekend after we got the car, or it would have taken us at least half an hour to get there.
When we arrived at the hospital, Semefa was sitting in a wheelchair awaiting a bed. We discovered the incident had actually happened just after 1am that morning (and it was now a good 12 hours or so later), and he had first been taken to the QE2 hospital (I'm not sure where that is) before being taken to the PA. Just after we arrived he was taken up to a bed. He was told that given the nature of his injury it would be quite possible that he'd be bumped back for more serious cases on the surgery list but had been fitted with a drip because he was 'nil by mouth' so he could be taken for surgery at short notice.
Semefa explained that he and some friends had been about to leave a party when a BMW showed up and pranged a car belonging to the girlfriend of one of his friends. The girlfriend asked the owner to get out of the car, and a guy in the car (henceforth to be referred to as 'the psycho')jumped out and started shouting at her. He then proceeded to attack her, twisting her arm behind her back and shoving her onto the bonnet of her car. The girl's boyfriend stepped forward to intervene and the psycho hit him across the face with a bottle. Another guy tried to restrain the psycho, but the guys who had accompanied the psycho in the BMW grabbed him and held him while the psycho punched him in the face. At some point the psycho breaks his bottle on the ground and gives the guy a cut to the hand. At some point after the bottle is broken, the psycho held it to Semefa's neck and threatened to 'cut' him. Apparently he tried multiple times to attack Semefa, once to kick him and another time holding an object, which proved to be a knife. The psycho swiped at him with the knife once or twice, with Semefa avoiding a blow, and then again, producing two cuts to Semefa's hand, one of them very serious. Semefa actually told us that he'd even thought perhaps the guy was holding a Taser, as the sensation when the knife went into his hand felt like a bad electric shock- he figured that must have been the moment the nerve was severed.
Apparently someone called the police. Semefa or one of his friends took down the licence plate of the BMW as he was taken to hospital in a car. The police said that because the assailant had left, it was up to the people at the party to come into a police station to make a complaint, and that Semefa would have to do it once he got out of hospital. That seemed a bit dodgy, but we happened to see some cops pulling up at the hospital when we went to get something from our car, so we asked them and they said that was correct.
We went to see Semefa today, as Gam was home sick with a cold (that I gave him... sorry Gam!), and he is still awaiting surgery. Getting a bit antsy and fantasising about just checking out of the place, somewhat understandably, but Gam told him to stay, as he's been put on systemic antibiotics to avoid infections, and hopefully he'll be seen to soon.
Luckily someone knew or managed to get the name of the psycho who attacked Semefa (and the others), as well as his approximate age and the licence plate of the BMW. It appears that he is a foreigner, so with any luck the prick will be deported. With the help of google, I found that there is only one person of that name listed in the Queensland whitepages and that they live very close to Mount Gravatt, where the party took place, which appears to confirm that the information Semefa received about the person's address is correct. There is also only one person of that name in the entire membership of facebook; they happen to be from the country that the psycho was said to be from, and in the Australia network- and judging by their photo, look to be of the right age. Hopefully the police will be able to sort the guy out. I sure hope the law doesn't look too kindly on someone who commits an unprovoked assault on a woman and then attacks her friends with a broken bottle and a knife. And I hope he hasn't got Australian citizenship so he can be deported once he's been dealt with under the law. What a scumbag.

QE2 is around Mt Gravatt way.
What a horrible thing to happen. I hope Semefa is doing OK.
And yes, I hope that arsehole in the BMW gets what is coming to him.
Jesus! What a fuckwit?
The guy sounded like he was hoped on drugs too. Which is a shame if the cops didn't go get him because by the time they do it will be out of his system.
Guys, all I can say is oh my god... what a horrible and frightening thing to have happened to Samefa and his friends. Unprovoked attacks make no sense to me.
A similar thing happened to a friend's brother and his friends, however the perpetrators ran away and the boys couldn't remember much. One guy unfortunately lost some teeth, for which he is still receiving treatment for.
The best thing to do is to go and make a statement so the guy can be charged with assault. It doesn't make up for the shock and the trauma of the attack, but it does mean he will have a criminal record, which can be quite restrictive in a lot of ways.
I hope Samefa gets his operation soon, it can't be good to leave the injury this long :s
Thanks guys... and Sophie- I take it the people who committed the assault on your friend's brother got away with it? It's rather bizarre, and I also thought the guy sounded like someone hopped up on drugs. So if he's cleaned his knife at least maybe they'll find drugs on him... but with Semefa stuck in hospital still waiting for treatment it's a bit annoying that the police could pretty much have done everything they needed to do by now if the police report had been made... grrr.
