Fuck. As if it wasn't bad enough having chronic hayfever, now this.
My hayfever has been so bad ever since the cold weather set in, there hasn't been a single morning where I haven't suffered from continual sneezing and a runny nose that gets rubbed raw by the endless tissues I'm forced to blow into. Now I finally have an ongoing prescription for Clarinase I can pop one of them once I decide the hayfever isn't diminishing and it goes some way to alleviating the runny nose. Taking a combination of once-a-day Telfast at night and a Clarinase in the morning works much better, but I don't like to take drugs all the damn time and besides, it's expensive. Still, my symptoms have been so bad that I picked up a packet of Telfast when I bought more Clarinase on the weekend. I forgot to take a Telfast last night before bed and I started sneezing around 4.30am. When it hadn't stopped by 5am I crawled out of bed to take a Telfast, and it kicked in after a while, meaning I'd just settled into a nice sleep by 6.30am when the alarm went off. I remembered to take my Telfast this evening so I can get a decent night's sleep.
Then I found out that not only does my hayfever put me at increased risk for having a stroke, taking antihistamines to combat it puts me at even higher risk. Fucking hayfever.
Having hay fever significantly increases the risk of a stroke, especially if sufferers use antihistamines, according to research.
Dr Eric Matheson and colleagues from the Medical University of South Carolina said in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine that their findings 'indicate that hay fever is an independent risk factor for first stroke. Patients with hay fever who use antihistamines may be at particularly great risk. Hay fever, previously viewed as a benign condition, may be a contributor to cerebrovascular risk.'
