The only reason Peter Costello is still hanging around the House of Representatives like a bad smell is because the private sector won't have him.
Remember the way Costello, along with Tony Abbott and John Howard used to flaunt their $200 000-$300 000 salaries in our faces, saying we were lucky to have them because they could be doing, like, sooooo much better in the private sector and we should shut up about their perks and huge salaries and just be grateful they were still working as pollies? Yeah? I remember. It was about as rich as Tony Abbott complaining being relegated to the poor-house when he was stuck with a $90 000 pay cut as a result of the Howard government losing the election.
Sucked in, Peter Costello. Just hurry up and bloody well leave already. Or was that promise as hollow as any other you ever made?

I have a certain sordid secret soft spot for Costello. Few people can speak like him and really get you laughing.
That aside, if he went back to the leadership end of the party I think they'd be in a much better place. That said, it'll take a while for him to stop being the old guard.
But you're right - make a decision and either make a thumb of it or bugger off.
Laughing? At him or with him? I used to think he was ok, but I think he has well and truly proved himself a gutless, whining weasel with about as much backbone as a nematode.
Costello was a better man in the coalition than most. But in the end he was gutless and he let Howard do some monstrous things and stood back and took it.
Costello doesn't need to work again. He will get a lifetime pension worth many bucks and he will prob sell his memoirs for 500k.
I miss his antics during Question Time...Kev just doesn't cut it with his repeated "$22bn dollar raid on the surplus" and "economic vandals" rubbish. So sick of hearing it! The man has the personality of a teatowel...a plain teatowel with no crocheted edges.
