King of Cakes

Gam and I are on a tight budget this week, so instead of eating out for our date night we're eating in. We decided to go and see what the oft-ogled King of Cakes at the Gailey Fiveways had to offer. While they sell a tasty array of pies, soft pretzels, bread and croissants and some handsome-looking cakes, our eyes were drawn immediately to the giant 'danish' on the counter. When we were told it contained cherries and custard, we were sold. After finding out that the cinnamon stars in the corner of the cabinet were only 90c each, we decided to take 4 instead of 2. I love cinnamon stars- our favourite café, Bean Scene, makes them at Christmas, but I could eat them all year round. I tried making some myself last year sometime, but frankly the sticky dough was more trouble than it's worth- perhaps it wasn't suited to hot summer weather. I have yet to find a good recipe for the icing, too, so I consider 90c apiece for good cinnamon stars like these a real bargain. Yum.

The star of the afternoon, however, was definitely the danish. At roughly $10-$11 it was a real bargain. It tasted extremely fresh, and all of the individual elements- the yeasty,buttery-flavoured and slightly sweet pastry with a drizzle of icing, soft cherries and just enough custard, were well done.

We also checked out the Clancy James butchery- we usually shop at the great value Toowong Village butchery (which has fresh meat and lovely staff), but the Clancy James is one of those fancy gourmet butchers that sells wagyu steaks and stuff. I was most interested to find out that they sell the same brand of harissa paste that we buy from the Fruity Capers Deli in Toowong, because the FC Deli have just upped the price for a little jar to $9.99!!!! It's only a couple of months (ok, maybe a year) ago that we were paying $6.99... I'd decided to have a go at making it myself, but Clancy James had it priced at $6.50 so I'll probably just buy it there from now on. Harissa is great stuff- Gam uses it in a lot of his cooking, and I mix it with olive oil and paint it onto slices of eggplant, zucchini and capsicum before grilling them... yummmm.

Anway, I've kind of deviated from the original topic: King of Cakes, Gailey Fiveways: Highly recommended.

Well assuming you can find a good bakery you can at least have Danish night!

How is it we have never run into each other - we seem to shop at a lot of the same places. Bean scene does the best cherry crumble! I'm a sucker for the lamb and rosemary pies at king of cakes. And what I like about Clancy James is that they will always get things for you or cut meat the way you want - they're always helpful. Like when we wanted to make veal stock - they got in veal bones for us.

Actually, it *is* amazing we've never run into each other... although now I can blame you on any occasion when we show up to Bean Scene and they've run out of cherry crumble :P

Sounds like we'll have to give the pies at King of Cakes a go- I'm a sucker for a good pie, but I'm usually wary of trying pies because so many of them are terrible.

You have to get there early before they run out of lamb and rosemary...
