Documenting more Israeli war crimes

A pattern of behaviour. From The Weekend Australian:

THREE witnesses have claimed that Israeli soldiers shot in cold blood two civilians who had their hands in the air on the second day of the Israeli offensive in Gaza.

In an investigation by The Weekend Australian in Gaza, the three people making the claim were on a tractor that was stopped by Israeli soldiers about 4 o'clock in the afternoon of January 4 in northern Gaza - the second day of Israel's ground operation.

Two of the witnesses were on a trailer being pulled by the tractor and the third was sitting on one of the wheel coverings.

They say Israeli soldiers who had taken over a house they were driving past shouted from a balcony for them to pull over.

When two of the men, Matar Abu Halima, 18, and Mohammed Abu Halima, also 18, got off the tractor with their hands in the air, they were shot several times in the chest. One died instantly, the other shortly after. A few minutes later, two others on the tractor, Nabeela Abu Halima and Omar Abu Halima, were also shot, but did not die - a woman says she was shot in the arm because she refused to leave the scene, saying she wanted to help the injured, and a man says he was shot through the arm because he refused to strip naked.

Israeli Defence Forces are investigating the allegations, but said the two people shot dead had been terrorists.

The tractor was taking to hospital two injured people and the body of a 15-month-old girl who had died shortly before in a fire following an attack by an Israeli rocket.

The witnesses say following the incident with the tractor, the charred body of the girl lay by the side of the road for eight days. Her legs and stomach were eaten by dogs.

The Weekend Australian has seen a picture of the girl taken by medics who finally picked her up - her head and torso are recognisable, although black with burns, while her legs are stumps with only the bones remaining.

Her brother is keeping a copy of the photograph in his mobile phone.

The incident occurred outside a primary school in the northern village of Beit Lahiya, which the IDF had taken over as a base for tanks.

The woman, Nabeela Abu Halima, says soldiers also violated her house, defecating in her pots and pans by cutting the seats out of furniture and placing pans underneath.

She says they wrote graffiti on the walls, including, in Hebrew, "Next time it's going to be harder" and "You have chosen Hamas!!!", a map of Israel with a fist next to Gaza and the drawing of a naked woman.

Twenty-four hours after The Weekend Australian put the allegations to the IDF, spokesman Captain Benjamin Rutland said the IDF was investigating the matters raised. "They are working on this .. issue. It is more important to the IDF to conduct a very thorough investigation than to complete it speedily."

Captain Rutland added: "The IDF trains its soldiers to minimise injuries to civilians and to respect all civilians on the battlefront."

Later, the IDF issued a statement saying: "In this incident, two armed militants were spotted riding a tractor along with an infant's body. The militants opened fire on IDF troops, and both the terrorists were killed in the following exchange of fire."

An IDF spokesman would not provide an answer to why, if there were two armed militants on the tractor, four people were shot - two shot dead initially and two shot through the arms later - and why the body of an infant was left by the side of the road for eight days.

And he would not say what the preliminary investigation found about whether the soldiers had defecated in Nabeela Abu

Halima's kitchen utensils, drawn graffiti and stolen her money.

Human rights investigators have begun working on the incident, which they say fits the definition of a war crime.

The two who survived both say they would give evidence about the incident to any official inquiry.

Nabeela Abu Halima is the mother of Matar. She said that as well as watching her son shot dead, her other son, Ali, 15, who was in the tractor, also saw his brother killed.

She said they had been travelling to the hospital when Israeli soldiers shouted from a balcony, "Stop! stop!"

"So we stopped," she said. "We raised our hands. Mohammed and Matar raised their hands too and got off the tractor, but Israeli soldiers shot them."

She said most of the bullets were in the chest of the two men; Matar appeared to die immediately but Mohammed was still alive.

He died some time later.

"An Israeli soldier shouted 'Leave! leave!' and I said 'Just let me take Mohammed and Matar.' They kept telling me 'Leave! leave!' and I said again, 'Just let me take Matar and Mohammed.'

"After that, they ordered Mohammed (a second Mohammed on the tractor, the brother of Omar Abu Halima) to take off his clothes. He tore his clothes off and was completely naked."

Nabeela Abu Halima said they then ordered Omar Abu Halima to strip naked and he refused. She said they then shot him through the arm. When she again refused to leave, she says they then shot her in the arm.

She said other people in the village said after they left, a tank turned the tractor on its side then ran over it, crushing it.

She said the incident and what she said Israeli soldiers did in her house have turned her from opposing Hamas to supporting them.

Apart from the graffiti, she says Israeli soldiers broke a cupboard and stole her life savings - about 30,000 Israeli Shekels (about $12,000).

She said she kept the money at home because "we don't know how to deal with banks or investments".

She said only a year ago she confronted Hamas fighters in her street who wanted to fire rockets into southern Israel, saying they should not because it would bring retribution upon her neighbourhood and that it would be people like her who suffered the consequences, not the fighters who would leave the area.

She said Hamas had threatened her when she had said this.

She added: "Now if Hamas members come back, I swear to god I will help them fire rockets into Israel."

Is there anyone who thinks they wouldn't, in her shoes?

Again, this is happening on our watch. We are in league with a government, the US, that actively supports the government of Israel, financially and militarily. Australia abstains from votes condemning Israeli war crimes in the UN. Why? What kind of monster do you have to be to be ambivalent about whether the kind of actions detailed above constitute gross crimes against humanity?

John Israel vs Pauly Stine

My neighbour and i don't get along, we've been having a property dispute. The local council redrew our plots and i now own part of what used to be his property. My neighbour wasn't too happy with this, even though it was authorised by the local council! I told him that the council owed me for doing nothing to fix a traffic crossing that killed my grandfather, oddly enough that didn't seem to be enough for him. Imagine!

After I tore down what used to be his kids' playhouse, he got really upset and bought a big dog and tried to get me to leave my new land. Fortunately my friend across town gave me an m4 to deal with the dog. It was a bit of overkill I admit, but it was free (did I mention my friend across town gives me stuff for free?) Anyway my neighbour decided he wanted to negotiate a solution, he said he'd be happy with 1/4 or so of the land back and I could keep the rest. It seemed like a good deal, but I'm afraid i couldn't deal with him because he wasn't a Christian.

Time passed, dogs got shot, eventually the old man of the house died and my neighbour's family got together and decided to try Christianity so we could negotiate. Unfortunately they decided to become southern baptists, so I cut off their water. And burned down their garage. The council didn't seem to mind. Also there was an unfortunate incident with their daughter while I was aiming at their new dog.

I kept telling them, in between clips of 5.56, that I wanted a period of perfect calm before we could try negotiating again, and that I wouldn't negotiate with any damn southern baptists, and it had to be an overcast day on the second thursday of an odd numbered year, and they had to find me a shrubbery. And well that's kinda where we are today. Their kids keep throwing bottles on my lawn. I don't understand why they hate me so much.

I've had to take over more and more of their land to protect myself. I need to keep the bottles off my lawn. To fund my expenses, I've built condos on the land I've been forced to take and let my cousins move in them, It seems to be working out well but they keep trying to take more land and I'm not sure it's such a good idea but they're my cousins. They keep going on about how all the land is rightfully mine. I'm not sure I should listen to them but my friend across town who gives me free stuff thinks it's cool so I don't really have anything to lose. Lately my cousins and I have planned a raid on the outhouse that now houses my neighbour's family. I think that should put an end to the bottles.

Happy January... Gaza

While we were sleeping drinking...

Apologies for the posting drought- I came down with a virus a couple of days after Christmas and have mostly been too tired to do anything (and I'm now back at work) and Gam has been back at work since the 2nd. So, a belated happy new year to everyone... Well, everyone except the poor sods stuck in the hellhole called Gaza. We all have a responsibility to stay aware of what's happening there. The world still pretends people didn't know what was going on during the first Holocaust, but there should be plenty of people alive to call the bastards liars when they finally claim not to have known the true extent of the humanitarian catastrophe being perpetrated upon the Palestinian people this time around.

People who actively supported the killing of these small children:

  • George W. Bush, President of the United States of America
  • Dick Cheney, Vice-President of the United States of America
  • Harry Reid, Democrat Senator, Nevada
  • Dick Durbin, Democrat Senator, Illinois
... god the list would be a long one if I included everyone who has voiced support for Israel's actions in its war on Gaza. The entire staff of The Australian, it seems, for one.

If I were to include everyone who has tacitly supported the wholesale slaughter of Palestinian civilians- women, children and men, despite the apparent assumption by Israel and every member of the western media that every male over the age of 14 is a terrorist- the list would be even longer. Most members of the Rudd government would be on it, most members of Malcolm Turnbull's Opposition would be on it. Barack Obama, who has also failed to condemn the state-sanctioned mass murder of Palestinians, would be on it.

The excuse de jour for Israel's 'collateral damage' seems to be the old 'Hamas are hiding in civilian areas' bullshit. What no-one in the western media sees fit to point out is that Gaza is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. There are no wide open spaces, Hamas has no tanks, no planes with bombs to drop on Israeli houses or troops- they have ordinary guys with guns and pathetic rockets that kill one or two Israelis per year. Complaining that Hamas is 'hiding' behind civilians when they exist in this tiny, densely populated ghetto created by Israel, is a bullshit excuse for blowing up children. Those deaths can never, ever be justified, and it takes a special kind of inhuman scum to even try it.

UPDATE: Good article from Online Opinion by Greg Barns, who comments on the rank hypocrisy of the Australian and US governments in their positions against Hamas and the Palestinian people:

In Australia you can go to jail for donating money to a cause like Hamas, which runs the lives of 1.5 million Palestinians on the Gaza Strip.

However, it is not an offence for you to support organisations in Israel, which actively disrupt the lives of Palestinians by ripping up their olive groves or financing illegal settlements in areas of clear dispute between Israel and the Palestinians.

Hypocritical? You bet.

Israel's latest assault on humanity

I'd been thinking that the media coverage of Israel's war on Gaza was rather woefully inadequate, and figured maybe it would take a few days for Gaza's side of the story to start trickling out. Stuff like this.

Tonight, however, I discovered why the coverage has been so damn poor. According to the BBC:

Israel is not currently permitting international journalists to cross into Gaza

Now, you'd think that that particular fact would be a pertinent one for, say, the Sydney Morning Herald to mention in the news articles on its website that pertain to Israel's attack on Gaza. Apparently not.

I was disgusted to read this piss-poor piece of reporting in the SMH yesterday, containing a quote from Israeli PM Ehud Olmert:

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert pledged Israel will do its utmost to avert a humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

"The people in Gaza do not deserve to suffer because of the killers and murderers of the terrorist organisation,'' he said, referring to Hamas.
He insisted that Israel had only hit Hamas targets, including command structures and rocket manufacturing installations.

I have two things to say about that:

A) There already is a humanitarian crisis in Gaza because of Israel's blockade of food, fuel and medical supplies. Something like 50% of children are malnourished, people are dying unnecessarily because of a lack of access to proper medical care, and there is running water only once per week. Israel has created a ghetto full of Palestinian people and is slowly starving them. 'Never again'? It's happening right under our noses and we're doing nothing to stop it because Israel uses the mantle of the Holocaust to deflect criticism for its crimes against humanity.

B) Bullshit only Hamas targets are being hit. In these situations there is always what the Americans like to call 'collateral damage'. The only reason we don't yet know about Israel's little 'whoopsies' that have ended in the bloody deaths of innocent civilians and children is because Israel is doing its best to keep journalists from the scene of their crimes. Here's something from a better-than-average article on the issue in the Guardian:

Ali Abu Rabia was a student at a UN vocational college for Palestinian refugees in the Rimal district of Gaza City. He sat an exam on Saturday morning, his father said, and after the first Israeli air strikes decided to go home. He was standing in the street with others when an Israeli missile struck, at around 1.30pm. Reportedly it had been aimed at a policeman seen nearby with a walkie-talkie.

"It was a place full of students. It was not a military base. But in spite of this they still attacked, all because of one policeman," said Ali's father

A single Hamas policeman in a public area filled with people certainly doesn't sound like a valid target to me. Nope. What Israel is doing is committing yet another round of crimes against humanity, with no regard for civilian life. Already it is being reported by the UN Palestinian Refugee Agency that at least 57 of the 300-odd victims were civilians.

The reporting on Israel's attack on Gaza is fucking disgraceful, as has been their way for years. Journalists who fail to do their job bear moral responsibility in the crimes they help cover up.

UPDATE 31/12/2008: At least 25% of all fatalities (390 and counting) in Israel's war on Gaza have been civilians. 42 children have been killed by Israel so far. God knows how many more are going to die unnecessarily because Israel continues to prevent medical supplies from reaching Gaza.

Water efficiency in farming- why is Australia so backward?

From the New York Times:

Israel is as obsessed with water as Mr. Ovits is. It was there, in the 1950s, that an engineer invented modern drip irrigation, which saves water and fertilizer by feeding it, drop by drop, to a plant’s roots. Since then, Israel has become the world’s leader in maximizing agricultural output per drop of water, and many believe that it serves as a viable model for other countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

Why not Australia? Because we're content to let the Cubbie Cottons of this country rape and pillage our river systems, and then pay welfare to the farmers who grow our food because there's no longer any water for them to work. Why don't we have a system that forces water efficiency on our primary producers?

Israel, a racist state

Headline in the SMH: 'Anti-racism summit poses conundrum for Rudd'.

How could Kevin Rudd possibly be in two minds about attending an anti-racism summit? I clicked the link to the story to discover why.

Ahh: Israel.

Canada has already pulled out, as a result of the outcry after the previous conference, in 2001 in Durban, South Africa. That gathering turned into a fracas over anti-Semitismas some Arab and Islamic countries urged delegates to condemn Israel as a racist state and denounce Zionism, its founding ideology, as a racist doctrine.

See, the thing is, Israel is a racist state. It is an apartheid state. Stating that fact is no more anti-semitism than condemning the white apartheid government in South Africa was anti-caucasian.

In fact, the very same day the SMH published this story, news.com.au sites were running a story titled 'Israel to build new Arab city'. Kind of like a Bantustan for Arabs, I suppose.

Really, this new 'Arab city' is a bandaid for Israel's abuse of the rights of its Arab citizens that has led to an absolutely untenable situation with regard to their (lack of) rights to obtain housing:

Why do Arab Israelis build homes without permits? Because for a group with a 3.9 percent birthrate, keeping a growing family under one original roof eventually becomes impossible. Applications by Arab Israelis for permits to build or expand are almost always denied – and moving to a Jewish neighborhood is usually impossible, either because of legal restrictions or outright discrimination against the minority.

Why does Kevin Rudd, or any Australian for that matter, need to kowtow to this wholly invented accusation of racism against anyone who criticises Israel's own racist policies? Why?

Israel shits all over human rights- #893

From the Guardian:

Morad Asonah's honeymoon ended abruptly when he returned home to Israel with his bride, Abir, to discover they - and thousands of other Israeli-Arab and Palestinian couples like them - had been banned from living together.

[...]

After their forced separation, Abir managed to return to Israel, following a three-month court battle and a lengthy security check, to build a family, raising two children on a "permit to stay" that expires every six months.

Abir is banned from working, studying, driving or buying a house with her husband. She is excluded from national health insurance and social security even though Asonah, as a married man with a family, pays a higher rate of tax. And if a family member is involved in an attack on Israel, her permit will be revoked and she will be deported to the West Bank.

"She has no status at all," says Asonah, a lawyer working for Adalah, a human rights group that has challenged the law in Israel's high court.

Israel's reign of terror

I post the links to these stories not because I feel there's anything I can really add, but mainly to show our kids one day that Gam and I did know what was going on and we didn't approve. Because I bet in 20-50 years' time there'll be a whole lot of people saying they never knew or supported what Israel was doing to the Palestinians, and how terrible it was, if only someone had done something, rah rah rah... when they knew all along, supported Israel's crimes and did nothing to help the Palestinians. Much like people ignored the pleas of various important rabbis for attention to the what was happening to Jewish people in the build up to and during the Holocaust, really. Not a single person afterward would admit knowing about the situation and doing nothing, which is exactly what happened. We didn't care then and we don't care now. We have learned absolutely nothing.

"Everything I did in my life was for what's now inside this house and now it's going to be destroyed," said Suleiman. "It's very hard for me to find somewhere else to live."

The Israeli authorities argue that Suleiman's house was built in a part of the West Bank known as area C, a designation from the era of the Oslo Accords which means Israel has full military and administrative control. In order to build, a Palestinian must apply for a permit from the Israeli authorities. If there is no permit - as in Suleiman's case - the building is liable for demolition.

Illegal

Area C covers 60% of the West Bank, home to around 70,000 Palestinians. It is also the area in which most Jewish settlements, all illegal under international law, are built. Compelling statistical evidence shows that while it is extremely hard for Palestinians to obtain building permits, settlements continue to grow rapidly.

Research by the Israeli group Peace Now found that 94% of Palestinian permit applications for Area C building were refused between 2000 and September 2007. Only 91 permits were granted to Palestinians, but 18,472 housing units were built in Jewish settlements. As a result of demolition orders 1,663 Palestinian buildings were demolished, against only 199 in the settlements. "The denial of permits for Palestinians on such a large scale raises the fear that there is a specific policy by the authorities to encourage a 'silent transfer' of the Palestinian population from area C," Peace Now said.

This year there has been a marked increase in demolitions.

[...]

The problems of the village of Far'un, south of Tulkarm, are complicated by the vast West Bank barrier, which here runs away from the 1949 ceasefire line that divides Israel and the Palestinian territories. The wide, steel fence, which passes just a few dozen metres from Suleiman's home, cuts off the village from a slice of its agricultural land and underground water reserves and has turned this area into a dangerous no-go zone: in December 2006, a 14-year-old Palestinian girl playing nearby was shot dead by an Israeli soldier.

Suleiman's house and that of his neighbour Emad Hassahsi, which has also received a demolition order, were built before the barrier arrived, in an area they were told - and they have letters that appear to support their claim - was area B, in which Palestinians have administrative control and therefore somewhere they thought they could safely build. Only later did the Israeli military announce it was in fact area C.

One effect of the strict planning curbs is to limit the growth of Palestinian villages. "If you look at the way the Israelis are enforcing planning and construction regulations you see they are being enforced in a one-sided way," said Avi Berg, research director of the leading Israeli human rights group B'Tselem, which has worked on the Far'un case.

Settlement growth continues apace despite the fact that the current peace talks are based on the US Road Map, under which Israel is required to freeze settlement activity. In another report, Peace Now said that since the talks began at Annapolis last November, Israel was still building 500 homes in West Bank settlements and had issued tenders for 750 homes in East Jerusalem settlements. Reports suggest another 1,400 homes will be built in two settlements in East Jerusalem and in the West Bank.

[...]

Not all the cases of demolition involve homes. In January, Israeli forces uprooted 3,200 trees, destroyed water cisterns and stone terraces in fields near Beit Ula, close to Hebron, in the southern West Bank. Again this was in area C. The civil administration said the demolition was an "enforcement activity" carried out after legal warnings.

But in this case the target was a €64,000 (£51,000) project from the European commission which began two years ago to provide a livelihood for the villagers, several of whom also put their own money into the planting.

"It was a tragedy for us," said Sami al-Adam, 46, a farmer who had put in 45,000 shekels. "They're tearing me out by my roots. They want to destroy Palestinian farmers psychologically and economically."

A spade is a spade

About fucking time:

The next UN investigator into Israel conduct in the occupied territories has stood by comments comparing Israeli actions in Gaza to those of the Nazis.

Speaking to the BBC, Professor Richard Falk said he believed that up to now Israel had been successful in avoiding the criticism that it was due.

[...]

Professor Falk said he drew the comparison between the treatment of Palestinians with the Nazi record of collective atrocity, because of what he described as the massive Israeli punishment directed at the entire population of Gaza.

He said he understood that it was a provocative thing to say, but at the time, last summer, he had wanted to shake the American public from its torpor.

"If this kind of situation had existed for instance in the manner in which China was dealing with Tibet or the Sudanese government was dealing with Darfur, I think there would be no reluctance to make that comparison," he said.

That reluctance was, he argued, based on the particular historical sensitivity of the Jewish people, and Israel's ability to avoid having their policies held up to international law and morality.

These and other comments from Professor Falk comments are, if anything, even harsher than the current UN investigator, John Dugard, who himself has been withering about Israel's actions.

John who? And if he was withering about Israel's actions, then why don't we get to hear about it in the media more often?

A spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry said that Israel wanted the UN investigator's mandate changed, so that he could look into human rights violations by the Palestinians as well as Israel.

If that were not to happen, the Israeli government may consider barring entry to the new UN investigator.

Er... like Saddam Hussein barred entry to UN investigators, and even after he let them back in, his barring them was pretext enough for the US to invade and turn the whole country into a ruin? Sooo... this 'freedom' thing we brought to Iraq... I take it if Israel bar entry to the UN investigator then they will be next on the 'freedom' hitlist? Maybe if we draw a picture in crayon suggesting Israel has nukes and get Condoleezza Rice to present it to the UN... oh wait, we don't need to fake the evidence because they already bloody well do have nukes.

NOTE: 'terr' tag applies here because what Israel is doing is just as much terrorism as some individual who straps a bomb to their belt and tries to blow up a bus. Only Israel is carrying out its actions on a massive scale against millions of people. I'm strongly of the opinion that the latter is much, much worse and our society should be ashamed for ignoring it.

Merry Holocaust and a Happy Intifadah

Today's the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Much like the spirit of Christmas this event has come to be meaningless. The official history goes the Nazis gassed 6 million (mostly) Jews during WWII. While this was going on the 'Allies' had no idea, being busily engaged in freeing the world for freedom, democracy and my little pony. The 'Allies' were shocked to discover death camps and half dead people in them and, squaring their jaws, resolved 'never again'.

Of course the truth is hardly as self-serving. In reality the western powers knew about the Holocaust. They knew about it even as they turned back shiploads of Jews to their deaths. They knew even as Jewish leaders killed themselves in protest at the Allies' inaction, unable to live while their people died.

The simple truth is that antisemitism was a national sport in every country in the world at the time. It still is in most nations, despite the momentary crowning of Muslims as the global scapegoat. Eventually the 322nd Rifle Division of the Red Army liberated Auschwitz on January 27 1945. Eight out of every ten German casualties in WWII were inflicted by Russians. Jaws were squared, impassioned speeches were made and 'never again' was declared.

Of course even as mournful ceremonies were taking place in Poland, filled with all manner of ghoulish 'dignitaries' the Israeli government was busy cutting off power and humanitarian supplies to the ghetto of the Gaza strip. The US was busy screaming at its Egyptian client government to clamp down on the Egyp/Gaza border to prevent desperate Palestinians escaping their fate by escaping into Egypt to buy the things they needed to live. In the beginning of the 21st century people are being crammed into ghettos and slowly starved. So much for never again.

Like a contraceptive, only concrete.

Spurred by an item on SBS news just now (and I only switched on because it wasn't time for ABC news yet- are you listening, SBS?):

I am so sick of hearing Israel's anti-Palestinian wall referred to by the media in the propaganda jargon of the Israeli government. It's not a 'barrier', it's a fucking wall. Just like the Berlin wall, except it is built partly with the aim of stealing more Palestinian land.

Our media shouldn't be pandering to Israel's wishes by playing along. Israel built the wall, they should be able to handle having it called exactly what it is.

US, Israel, EU back Fatah coup

Not hearing much these days about the democratically elected Hamas government who won a huge majority in the Palestinian elections. In fact, we're not hearing the word 'democracy' mentioned in the same breath as Palestine at all.

Funny, that.

An Obstacle to Peace

Mikey links to an article in the SMH on how the Irish peace process of power sharing gives hope for the Palestinian issue to be resolved. I was going to reply to his post in comments but it got a little long. This is not an examination of Mikey's post but a criticism of the article and a suggestion that even though it says one good thing, which Mikey picked up, it continues another bad thing, which he might have missed.

"Almost every armed struggle is underpinned by grandiose claims of ideological purity. Any engagement with the electoral process erodes those justifications, because it brings the would-be revolutionaries into the messy business of realpolitik, however reluctantly, and makes it more difficult for them to ignore the will of the broad mass of people, who are almost never as radical as the guerillas themselves.

Making peace with erstwhile violent groups is a delicate business: it requires not merely pressure or concessions, but a nerve-wracking combination of both. But now is the time to engage with the Palestinians.

The late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat used to talk about a "peace of the brave". He never showed that bravery. Neither Israel nor its friends in the West should be found wanting now."

Say what you like about Arafat's legendary corruption but he was prepared to accept the Oslo agreement which would have turned Palestine into a series of Bantustans connected by strips of Israeli held territory. He was prepared to give up the right of return for Palestinian refugees. He recognised Israel, despite the fact that Israel has never and will never recognise Palestine. He marginalised the kill 'em all radicals in the Palestinian govt. Even while radicals in the Israeli government (Netanyahu, Sharon) became prominent.

Gush Shalom describes Arafat's lack of bravery in negotiating with Israel.

All Arafat ever got for his trouble was constant undermining and closed doors. Starting with creation of Hamas by Israel to oppose his secular Fatah. The murders of moderate opponents of Israel in Palestine, the marginalisation of moderate voices and an endless supply of guns, money and political support from the west to Israel to terrorise him and his people. Not once did Israel or the west ever allow Arafat to go back to his people with something to say, "We have been heard." Every opportunity to humiliate and belittle him was taken. Even when Palestinians hold elections and the wrong people win we hold an entire nation hostage and slowly starve them to death simply for exercising the rights and values we spent decades screaming at them to exercise.

After all that he gets derided in an article purporting that, "all armed struggle is underpinned by grandiose claims of ideological purity". Goddamn right. Even when faced with an example of a leader forced to compromise and detested by many of his people for it, the author is unable to sully their ideological purity and entertain the concept that the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is not entirely Yasser Arafat's fault. Western purity rules demand that no Palestinian can be thought of as willing to make peace. All Palestinian demands are outrageous while Israeli demands are reasonable. When Palestinians accede to an Israeli demand Israel has no obligation to accede to one of theirs. All of this stems from the exact same ideological purity the author claimes to detest while busily employing it against Palestinians.

To sound like a broken record, it's nothing new. The same purity laws once applied to the notorious terrorist Nelson Mandela and his organisation the ANC. It was Mandela who didn't have the courage to make peace, the ANC whose demands were outrageous and apartheid that seemed like the most natural thing in the world. Practically every government in the world, including the one of this country, supported apartheid. Today, you can't find an apartheid supporter (I'm looking at you, John Howard) and this is something that hasn't even been dead for 20 years.

We have killed, marginalised and ignored anyone who would negotiate with us. We repaid attempts to talk with death and suffering. We have destroyed whole countries to preserve our right to change Arab leaders like light bulbs. All the while, even now, not once have we ever considered that we might be the ones adhering to intellectual purity laws that portray us as angels and our enemies as demons.

Am I wrong? Go back to the beginning of this post and look at the picture, examine your feelings and think about what you thought when you first saw it.

For everything else there's Holocard...

"Alive, We Are A Nuisance; Dead, We Are An Asset"

Annual expenditure by Israel on illegal settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories?
- About $500,000,000.

Annual cost to Israel of keeping 10,000 soldiers in the West Bank to protect those illegal settlements?

- About $900,000,000.

Average compensation for each Israeli family repatriated from the illegal settlements in the Gaza Strip?

- $350,000 to $475,000.

One hundred thousand Holocaust survivors living in poverty in Israel; dumpster diving for food?

- Priceless...

US late to Israel's cluster bomb party

From the New York Times:

The Bush administration will inform Congress on Monday that Israel may have violated agreements with the United States when it fired American-supplied cluster munitions into southern Lebanon during its fight with Hezbollah last summer, the State Department said Saturday.

[...]

Cluster munitions are anti-personnel weapons that scatter tiny but deadly bomblets over a wide area. The grenadelike munitions, tens of thousands of which have been found in southern Lebanon, have caused 30 deaths and 180 injuries among civilians since the end of the war, according to the United Nations Mine Action Service.

[...]

Any sanctions against Israel would be an extraordinary move by the Bush administration, a strong backer of Israel, and several officials said they expected little further action, if any, on the matter.

But sanctions against Israel for misusing the weapons would not be unprecedented. The Reagan administration imposed a six-year ban on cluster-weapon sales to Israel in 1982, after a Congressional investigation found that Israel had used the weapons in civilian areas during its 1982 invasion of Lebanon. One option under discussion is to bar additional sales of cluster munitions for some period, an official said.

Israel committed war crimes and was punished with a slap on the wrist (meaning America stopped selling them cluster bombs for a little while- they probably had a good stockpile anyway, so the 'ban' was of no consequence). Now it seems likely that for committing the very same war crime they're faced with getting either another slap on the wrist or getting off scot-free. I'm sure the Israeli government is quaking in its boots.

Nine sleeping children killed by Israel

At 6am local time in Gaza Israel fired five shells at a row of houses killing 19 people as they slept. Nine of them were children.

Witnesses said that the first shell hit a home, causing deaths and injuries. Residents took shelter while rescuers attempted to retrieve the bodies and care for the wounded. Many residents were sheltering in a nearby alleyway when a second shell landed, causing most of the casualties. A further five or six shells landed in the same vicinity over a period of 15 minutes, witnesses said.

Most of the victims belonged to the Athamna family who lived in several adjacent homes. Majid Athamna, 55, said he was sleeping when the first shell landed. “Some people were killed and injured. We went downstairs and the second shell hit while we were taking out the bodies. Then more shells came. I saw bodies cut into pieces. There were children and women. God knows why they hit this house.”

At Kamel Adwan hospital in nearby Beit Lahiya, Yazan Athamna, 15, was being treated for shrapnel injuries to his stomach and legs. He said that his mother and two grandmothers were killed as they slept. “I got out of the house and was running in the street. Then people came to help and the shelling started again,” he said.

Muhammed Odwan, 21, was lying on his stomach with shrapnel injuries to his back. “I was in the house sleeping. The shelling started and I got out of my house. All my neighbours were screaming for help and then it started it again as people gathered. My father was killed in the alleyway where we stood. Why did they do this?"

Israel kills unarmed women assisting militants

Israel has shot dead two women who were part of a group of women attempting to assist in the escape of militants from a Palestinian mosque. Another 10 women were injured, some seriously. Israel claimed they had shot dead 8 militants but were 'not aware' that women were hit.

Funny, because it looks pretty obvious from the photo that they murdered those women.

Story here and here.

Update: The spokesman for the US State Department has said Israel was just 'defending itself'.

Taking the moral high ground

This is from Jesus' General:

How democracies wage war
I'm almost completely lifting the following from the Angry Arab. I've never done that before, and I'll doubt I'll ever do it again, but I think it's important that you see how our client state, Israel, a democratic nation, uses precision munitions, paid for and provided for us, to take the fight to the terrorists.

Samira's story is so sad. She reached Tyre hospital today, but she was injured on Friday when Israeli strikes hit her house in Dhayreh in South Lebanon. She was taken on a donkey ( yes a donkey) to Nakkoura , and from there they had to hitch hike to Tyre. By the time they got there she had lost all her blood. She will not make it , the doctors say. she was wounded in the leg and had she been able to reach the hospital sooner , she would have been fine. But due to the fact she bleeded for so long, her brain was damaged and she is now considered clinically dead.

Mohamad is not related to samira, but he reached the hospital in Tyre today too. He was with his dad on their motorcycle when some pilot decided to see if he can get them. He did get them : the father is now in the hospital in a critical condition : he doesn't remember his own name. Mohamad , 11 , will not die , but he lost both his legs.

Remember, we are better than the terrorists because we use only the best, most expensive precision weapons to kill and maim civilians.

The Australian: keeping the nation underinformed

Headline for a story on The Australian website today:

'Israel widens targets to hit civilian sites'

The implication being that civilian sites were not targets already? What rock has The Oz been living under for the past month?

Israel kills farm workers

Target practice...

Looks like Israel is trying as hard as it can to provoke Syria into entering its war.

I can only hope that history will judge Israel and the governments supporting its war crimes in the way they deserve. They're sure as hell getting a free ride now.
