Aussies liken women to uncovered meat

I wonder when all Australians will be called on to condemn female football supporters who claim that young women who are raped by Rugby League and AFL players are asking for it because of their 'provocative' behaviour? Will we see week after week of headlines filled with righteous 'community outrage' featuring female footy supporters being hounded by the media to recant their horrid, anti-women views?

Sheik Taj Al-Din Al-Hilali condemned sexual violence too, but used a metaphor that afforded it a similar caveat that a woman's behaviour and dress could explain some instances of sexual violence by men.

They're all wrong, of course, but I highly doubt we'll see the same sort of outrage manufactured by the media without a swarthy man belonging to a minority religion wearing a funny hat to heap the venom upon.

I think it's human nature to try and blame the victim.

In the NRL/Broncos case, the Courier Mail reported that the woman was performing oral sex on the three players, then had sex with two of them and threw the stop sign up when the third one tried to film it.

It's hard to sympathise with someone who gets involved in that.

Depends- if the NRL players stopped when she asked them to and she then retrospectively claimed rape for something that started out consensual I wouldn't have any sympathy at all. If she tried to stop and they forced her to keep going, that's a whole different game- that's rape.

In a situation like that it's very easy to say "well I wouldn't have done that"- as opposed to the classic hollywood scenario where the woman is walking alone in the dark and gets attacked by a stranger. I think people can easily empathise with the terror a woman might feel in the latter scenario, but not the sense of violation and loss of control of the woman in the first. We still have a propensity to condemn women for being promiscuous- as if the crime of rape becomes proportionately less serious the more sexual partners a woman has had.

What we can say of the woman in the case you mention is that the situation she got herself into makes it very hard to prove absence of consent.

Truth is, the situation of the Islamic and of the pagan Aussie footballer culture , has no moral equivalency with the teachings of the Church and it far better treatment of women when people uphold its teachings. When they don;t that is bad of course. In Islamic beleifs and in pagan footballer culture women are objects for the peer group.

Many a visting Turk during the middle ages noted on visiting the Chrstiand West ( at that time) how much better women were treated in so many ways).
Probably not on your undergraduate reading list though guys.
