Breaking News!!!

Despite what you might have seen on Channel 7, baby animals do die in the wild. Even if you call them Colin. Colin, Colette, now that an autopsy has determined the animal's sex, was euthanased a few days ago. Of course all number of cranks and crack pots fronted the media waving bits of hose attached to buckets explaining how they could feed an animal the size of a small yacht and teach it how to find krill when it grew to 30 tons.

The first I heard about our ex-cetacean was a bit of newstainment on ACA where an eternally serious Tracy Grimshaw informed me that Colin had been abandoned by his mother, who is no doubt a dole bludging renter from hell with 5 different kids to 5 different fathers (cut to ACA reporter in a speedboat chasing after a humpback whale 'Why won't you talk to us Sharleeayne?'). Now the SMH needs to talk to 'eminent scientists' to discover that animals die in the wild, even baby ones, now STFU and eat your veal. Honestly, the world is getting dumber all the time.

Hallelujah...

I thought exactly the same thing, watching the whole thing unfold through the funhouse-mirror medium of Channel 7.

I love animals as much as anyone, and for that reason I think putting Colin/Colette to sleep rather than letting her suffer for longer was the most sensible option.

I doesn't seem to register with the 'crackpots' that if the calf hadn't got herself stranded up a Pittwater inlet her fate would've been getting ripped to shreds by sharks. Then again, maybe that would've been a more dignified way to go than death via public access media...
