Take it seriously

People who do shit like this need to be locked up. No doubt if they're caught they'll cop a slap on the wrist from a disinterested judge, but the evidence is there that people who commit acts of cruelty and violence upon animals pose a danger not just to animals but to other people.

I'm really sick of seeing pathetic penalties handed down in Australia for genuine animal cruelty offences.

In other news, the RSPCA wants animal hoarding to be recognised as a mental illness (surely more likely a symptom of a mental illness?) so they can obtain orders stating that the neglected animals do not have to be returned to their owners. Apparently this is required of them as the law currently stands. Seems kind of obvious that people who neglect their animals should be prevented from owning them- I would have thought there was already provision for that. Perhaps, just like animal cruelty cases, the judges treat the cases in a really half-arsed manner.

Photo from here.

Update:yet another great example. In April 2006 some guy was fined $1800 for torturing and killing several cats. The sentence was appealed and he has now been sentenced to 3 months in prison. That's a good start, but I don't agree that it's an appropriate sentence. That's less than a month per cat- a bulk discount for torture of animals.

Meanwhile, some lady who rorted centrelink for the princely sum of $10 000 per year over 8 years has been jailed for 3 years. I feel quite safe in saying who I'd feel safer living next door to, and it's not the animal torturer.

Yeah that pet hoarder one was interesting. Esp since they think they're saving animals rather than condeming them to a life of misery and starvation.

100% recidivism rate too!
