The real problem Australia has with refugees
Unfortunately, Australia is still in the grip of the Howard government's policies when it comes to our refugee policy. Howard's 'deterrence' policies- indefinite detention, letting boatloads of people drown, excising our own land from the migration zone, forced deportation- are still in place. All the while, the war that the bastard had a hand in starting back in 2003 has created millions more refugees, of which we are taking essentially none. Even though by our actions we bear significant responsibility for the lives of every single one. We're well overdue for a policy overhaul.

DIAC is like an oil tanker going at full speed. It takes time to change its course.
Hopefully that is now happening.
I met a toe rag from DIAC who said how much joy he took in kicking in doors to raid places and burn indon boats that were caught illegal fishing.
That fuck needed his nuts stomped.
Did you hear the recent news about a bunch of Indonesian fishermen they'd detained- illegally, as it turned out- and by the time they figured it out and said their 'whoopsies' they'd already burned the boats?
Agreed... anyone that sadistic definitely needs their nuts stomped.
