D'Arcy to claim self-defense, shows off small bruise

Get this: Nick D'Arcy will be claiming self defense in his trial for the alleged assault of Simon Cowley.

D'Arcy's lawyers will also be cross-examining Cowley:

Mr D'Arcy's lawyers told Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court today they wanted Mr Cowley to be cross-examined because he had failed to recall in his police statement some events that other witnesses had reported.

I think the obvious response to that would be: "I think it's quite obvious my memory was affected after being felled with a hit from D'Arcy so vicious that I suffered multiple facial fractures so severe that it required 5 titanium plates to be inserted into my face".

Mr Cowley, 27, had five permanent titanium plates fitted after suffering fractures to his jaw, eye socket, hard palate, cheekbone and nose.

He had to feed through a straw for some weeks after the incident.

I'll be interested to hear their argument about how D'Arcy's "response" was reasonable and proportional to the threat he faced.

Yeah me too. The story they were pulling before was something like "Cowley moved his hand and I felt threatened so I decked him in self-defense". I think they'll have to jazz it up a bit, somehow.
