Feifei's spiral into addiction

What do Purina One put in their 'Advanced Hairball Control' biscuits that make it so irresistible to a cat who was fairly blasé at best, and downright picky at worst about his food?

I decided to trial Feifei on them a couple of months ago when they were on special and he positively loved them. Whereas previously we could fill a bowl and let him eat at will throughout the day, he would wolf down a bowl of these and be haranguing us for more a mere 5 minutes later.

Before I knew it, Feifei was living up to his name, having put on 2 kilos to go from 5.5kg to 7.5kg- a 36% increase in bodyweight. I'd decided to pop him on the scale after realising that picking him up felt more like I was hoisting a small child than a previously lean (if soft and spectacularly un-muscular) cat. Crazy stuff.

On the plus side, he hoiked up a hairball exactly one week after starting the biscuits and hasn't coughed up a single one since (I would say he previously averaged one a month). But now I've had to ration his biscuits, weighing out a fixed amount in the mornings, and he doesn't understand why. We brought him up to ask politely and do a dance when he wanted food, and now when his begging and dancing doesn't work he resorts to violence- standing up on his hind legs to give me a shove with both paws, patting me on the leg with just enough claw to let me know he means business... whatever Purina One puts in those biscuits seems to work, but it's also like a fattening form of crack for cats, apparently.
