Peter Harvey does the 'news'

Don't ask me why Nine chopped Pete's head in half... it's the only photo I could find!

Just when you thought commercial TV news couldn't get any worse:

Nine Network is going to have a little pontification segment for Peter Harvey (the old codger on 60 minutes). This will only apply to Sydney unless the concept is 'successful'. Whatever that means.

The commercial networks have a nightly half hour of 'news' broken up into four uneven segments:

1. The ads. There's probably a solid 10 minutes of ad breaks throughout the half hour of commercial 'news' on channels Seven and Nine.

2. The sport. Another 10 minutes.

3. The fluff. 'Cat stuck up a tree'. 'Baby's hand gets stuck in drain'. 'Woman gives birth on the way to hospital'. 'Celebrity marriage breaks up'. Whatever- this shit is fill. 5 minutes.

4. The 'real news'. One token world news story plus a couple of minutes on Australian politics. 5 minutes.

Somewhere in there they manage to fit the weather and a bit of contrived banter between the nightly hosts. Commercial news sucks.

Nine Network's move to add Peter Harvey to the nightly swill shows that they are confusing bombast for gravitas. Luckily their viewers are just as easily fooled.

Hey! Peter Harvey once walked down the street with a massive erection. There were no survivors.

I hate, I hate, I hate the over focus on sport.

I used to love SBS news. But Stan Grant has ruined it. He's a twat.

I've never read a better to-the-point description of exactly what commercial nightly news is. Bravo. Loved that. Particularly the example "baby's hand gets stuck in drain". Haha! How sad that it's so true.
