Mikey has made a post on the ridiculous furore over the NSW state government's appointment of a man who happens to be a former heroin addict to the position of director-general of the Education Department.
What we have in Michael Coutts-Trotter is a great example of someone who was addicted to heroin, committed a serious but non-violent offence involving the distribution of heroin, and eventually succeeded in turning his life around. His privileged background probably helped in this, but regardless of that, exactly what would his detractors have him do? Should he be in a chain-gang somewhere, digging ditches? He's employed, he's presumably paying taxes, he's raising a family- what exactly should he be doing? How can they have a problem with the guy?
