The ALP national conference has voted in favour of a policy that would ensure legal recognition of same sex relationships and allow same sex couples property and superannuation rights equal to those of heterosexual couples.
I didn't see any mention of rights to IVF and adoption. Presumably, Labor is still upholding the 'gay people are inferior parents' line.
The ALP emphatically stated that their policy would not include gay marriage. Of course, even the prospect of limited rights for gay couples brought the bigots out swinging. Joe de Bruyn of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association proclaimed that allowing even these rights to gay couples and families would cause as much damage to heterosexual relationships and families as the Howard government's WorkChoices scheme. No, really. Hating gay people is as important to Joe de Bruyn as standing up for worker's rights.
The national secretary of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association, Joe de Bruyn, said the Tasmanian scheme gave same-sex couples the same status as married couples, which would demean and undermine marriage.
"It robs marriage of its unique and privileged status and it puts it on the same level as a radically different type of union," Mr de Bruyn said.
"At a time when we are fighting to protect working families from Howard's Work Choices we are at the same time attacking the status of those same families."
It gets me every time. All these bigots start frothing about how heterosexual relationships are threatened by the prospect of gay marriage, but no-one is ever able to provide a sound reason why.
For some reason I don't feel any particular compulsion to leave Gam and start searching for a female partner simply because more legal rights may be enacted for people in same sex relationships, and Gam doesn't seem to have any particular desire to seek out a male partner to start a family with simply because they'll be able to share superannuation under a Labor government.
I wonder why Joe de Bruyn, John Howard and all the other raving bigots feel that their marriages are threatened by gay relationships?

Even the fucking Victorian Greens were only pushing for civil unions. Why do these bigots have so much power?
A local Greens councillor suggested support for a same-sex partner register, and instantly got threats by religious groups planning to run against her. YOU WANT A BAN ON A LIST OF NAMES?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE.
And the members of the SDA need to take control of their union - religious nutters have hijacked it for too long.
