Q: Why is this newsworthy?
A: Because I've lived in Queensland for 5 years, and this is quite possibly the first time I've seen the state Opposition put forward a sensible policy!
Registration should be free for people driving hybrid petrol or electric cars, the Opposition has put to the State Government.
Shadow Environment Minister Rosemary Menkens introduced legislation to State Parliament this morning to give concessions to people who own the environmentally friendly cars.
It now costs $264.35 to register a hybrid car.

That's one kick arse policy, bravo for those involved - it'll appeal to the penny-pinchers (those that tend to care more for their own hip pocket than the world around them). Great stuff.
And I just don't get the whole fashion statement = car thing. To me it looks like a tool.
fair enough larry but tools can be functional and aesthetically pleasing. besides the prius is built around the concept of an interchangeable chassis/poweplant that you can build a car around modularly. why shouldn't they make one that looks better?
a car is the second most expensive thing most ppl buy and we want more people to buy them, generate revenue and spur manufacturers in the right direction. until someone comes up with a hybrid car that makes people go, 'dammit, i want that!' for whatever reason there will be no adoption and no financial incentive to push manufacturers to make more.
while we might be able to get away with not having a car for now or even using public transport for the most part, chances are we're going to have to buy a car someday. when we do, price will come into it. not being able to just fork out an extra $13,000 for a prius instead of a peugeot 206 4-door wouldn't mean we cared about the environment less.
govt. subsidies might help but the only thing that'll make hybrid cars anything other than $37,000 massage chairs for middle class guilt is if more people start buying them and drive the price down.
